What to Bring on a Walking Tour of New Orleans’ Cemeteries

New Orleans has forty-two cemeteries. Many of these are available for tours with licensed tour guides. Taking a tour is a marvelous way to learn more about New Orleans‘ culture, burial traditions, cemetery architecture, and its people. Do your research beforehand; each cemetery is unique. Most people are surprised by how widely the cemeteries in New Orleans vary. No two are the same in history, appearance, or vibe. Find the cemetery that works best for your interests. Here are some tips for taking a walking cemetery tour.

1.     Wear Comfortable Clothing and Shoes. It is a walking tour, and most tours range from a half-mile to two miles. This is not the time to break in your favorite new pair of heels or cowboy boots. Chances are that you will be walking on a variety of different surfaces – grass, cement, asphalt, brick, etc. Some of the ground might even be broken and uneven. Wear clothing and shoes that you know you can move in easily.

2.      Bring a Hat or an Umbrella. With the exception of Metairie Cemetery, most cemeteries offer little or no shade. Under the hot sun with the reflections bouncing off of the tombs and mausoleums, it can be a little intense. Umbrellas also serve double duty in case it rains. The weather can be unpredictable in New Orleans and most tours have a “rain or shine policy” and mean it!

3.     Bring Sunscreen. To add to the above rule, even in the fall and winter months the sun can be extreme when you’re among massive marble mausoleums. Be kind to your skin and pack some sunscreen.

4.     Water. Staying hydrated is always a good idea, especially if you partook in some of New Orleans‘ famous cocktails the night before. Pack a bottle or two of water just in case. You won’t regret it.

5.     Bring Your Questions. If you have a question, ask! Tour guides are often versed in other areas of New Orleans history and enjoy sharing their knowledge. Also, don’t be afraid to ask for recommendations. Most tour guides love to give advice on their favorite local restaurant, dive bar, jazz venue, etc. Most cemeteries are also walking distance to numerous other attractions. However, be sure and ask your guide if it is safe to explore the neighborhood the cemetery that you are touring is in.

6.     Tips. Most tour guides are paid a flat fee for giving tours, regardless of how many people are on the tour or whether they  have to give a percentage of their tour price to booking companies. Tips are always appreciated and valued. If you like your tour, be sure and let your guide know by giving them a tip.

No matter how you approach it, a cemetery tour is a great experience. But if you come prepared with the basics above, not to mention a sense of curiosity and adventure, your tour will be that much more comfortable, enjoyable, memorable, and fun!
